Energy Savings Methodology

How our estimated energy savings are calculated.

Savings figures are modelled estimates. Your actual saving will depend on your circumstances and is not guaranteed.

How we calculate the estimate

We compare the representative annual cost of a standard variable energy tariff with competitive alternative tariffs available in the market. The difference between those annual costs provides an estimated potential saving.

Our calculation uses a typical household in Great Britain with both gas and electricity, paying by Direct Debit and using a standard single-rate electricity meter.

The £180 annual estimate

The £180 figure is based on five published market comparisons recorded during the 12 months before 3 September 2026. Those comparisons showed representative annual differences of £173, approximately £265, £141, £159 and £165.

The average of these figures is £180.60. We rounded this down to £180 to produce the estimated annual saving used in our marketing.

Save up to £260 per year

The ‘save up to £260 per year’ figure uses a January 2026 reference-point comparison. Ofgem’s annualised price-cap figure for a typical dual-fuel household paying by Direct Debit was £1,758. A comparable competitive fixed-tariff benchmark available at the same reference point was £1,497.66.

£1,758.00 − £1,497.66 = £260.34 estimated annual saving, rounded down to £260.

This is a modelled potential maximum under the stated comparison, not a guaranteed saving or an average achieved by all customers. The tariff used for the comparison may no longer be available.

Utility Warehouse, OVO Energy and Utilita

The same £180 market benchmark may be shown to eligible customers whose current supplier is Utility Warehouse, OVO Energy or Utilita. It is not a measured average of savings achieved by customers of those suppliers and does not mean that every customer will save £180.

The estimate is intended for customers on a comparable dual-fuel, Direct Debit, standard variable tariff. Customers on fixed, tracker, bundled, Pay As You Go, Economy 7, single-fuel or other specialist tariffs may receive a different result.

What could affect your saving?

Your actual saving will depend on your existing supplier and tariff, energy use, region, meter type, payment method, exit fees, eligibility and the tariffs available when you compare. You could save more, less or nothing. Any personalised quote will use the information you provide at the time of comparison.
